A Study on the Nature of the Leukocytosis-Producing Substance in Water-Soluble Tissue Extract

Abstract
In the previous experiments, the author found leukocytosis-produing substance in the water soluble extract of normal or autolized tissues of rabbits.
Several kinds of. fractions by biochemical methods from liver extract which was selected as a representative sample were prepared at this time in order to outline the active substance, testing their ability of inducing leukocytosis, and obtained the following results.
1) Chloroform and alcohol soluble fraction of normal or autolized Iiver extract had no ability of inducing leukocytosis.
2) Precipitate by acetone from the normal or autolized liver extract induced a marked fall in leukocyte count at first, and thereafter a marked rise in the count.
3) The change in leukocyte count with protein-free liver extract of normal or autolized tissues was similar to that caused by liver extract from normal or autolized tissues.
4) The above results suggest that the active factor of leukocytosis-producing substance in normal or autolize<.d liver extract belongs mainly to the protein-free fractin of such extract.
